November 2017

Dear Colleagues,

In the spring of 2010, the Provost and the Executive Vice President for Business and Administration signaled Emory University's commitment to engage in a process that looked at distinct labor segments within our Emory community. In January 2013, the Class and Labor 1 Committee released their report and recommendations centered around issues related to staff employed across the university. In October 2013, then Provost Claire E. Sterk charged the Class and Labor: Faculty Committee (Class and Labor Phase 2) on behalf of the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Business and Administration. This committee has completed its charge in the development of recommendations.

The Office of the Provost has made available here the 11-page Executive Summary of the report generated by the committee, which includes the recommendations. The work done by the Class and Labor Phase 2 Report Committee was essential to identifying opportunities for addressing the areas. We deeply appreciate the time and energy that the committee members dedicated to the process and to the university.

In order to examine the recommendations generated in the Class and Labor 2 report, a Steering Committee has been formed composed of Emory faculty and administrative leaders who will review the full report (over 350 pages), all appendices, and recommendations and advise on steps toward implementation. This Steering Committee for the Class and Labor 2 Report has been asked to:

Assess which recommendations should be moved forward for assignment to working groups to initiate implementation Determine which recommendations require additional data collection and analysis before being assigned to a working group Examine which recommendations (if any) are beyond the scope of this Steering Committee and may not be appropriate for moving into an implementation phase Recommend individuals to serve on working groups that can be assigned recommendations selected for moving forward Monitor working groups and report on progress to the Provost and the Executive Vice President for Business and Administration
The Steering Committee represents faculty from across Emory and will be in place through 2021, with recurring progress updates to the community. The Steering Committee has also been charged to proactively champion efforts to address issues raised in the report and support engagement with faculty colleagues.

As the Emory faculty community moves forward with this work, we hope that you will be willing to engage with this process through working groups and open communication with the Steering Committee, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Business and Administration. Ongoing and active engagement will be crucial as we do the important work that will continue to build the future of faculty excellence at Emory.

With warm regards,
